Guest Post: The Stars Forgot Us by R.J. Garcia

Welcome R.J. Gracia who is here to tell us about the inspiration for The Stars Forgot Us!

My mom first introduced me to storytelling in general. She always told me bedtime stories. And she loved anything ‘horror’ and ‘scary.’ I was drawn to it, too. She always had Stephen King novels lying around. Two of my favorites are IT and Stand by Me (known as The Body.) Both stories made me want to write.

Some of my favorite shows like Stranger Things and Supernatural inspired The Stars Forgot Us. My other novels have been more coming-of-age suspense. I wanted to push the envelope a little but still stay true to my characters. This time around the suspense outweighs the coming-of-age elements.

Of course, it doesn’t take the place of an antidepressant. But part of the reason I read and write suspenseful stories is to get chemicals in my brain going when it’s not making serotonin. Depression is something I have struggled with. Writing horror/suspense also pushes it a little further and drives us to examine the darkest fears in our mind.

I have worked with teens as a social worker, and they inspire me. Most of The Stars Forgot Us characters were based on real people. Jamie is based on someone I knew as a kid.

Also, my first apartment was in an old house. I kept noticing things were moved, and food and money went missing. I would tell my parents, but they would say no, you just spend and eat more than you realize. Finally, one day I had a migraine and called off work and fell back to sleep. I woke up, hearing the TV in the living room on. I nervously tiptoed to investigate and saw a strange woman. My heart leaped to my throat as our eyes met, and we both gasped. Thankfully, she ran out of my apartment. It turned out my landlord had never changed the locks. This helped me write the story of a teen boy discovering a mysterious girl living in his house.
